President's Report

                               Roasting, Tasting & WOWING
I am so excited about all of the great NACE events coming in the future. This month is the 1st Annual NACE Roast- The Roast of Joe Mahoney!! When the programming committee pitched the idea of roasting a local industry icon, the whole board loved the idea. A roast by nature is an honor. An individual is ridiculed and mocked by his closest friends and colleagues all in the name of fun. For our first roast the members voted a fine example of an Orlando icon, Joe Mahoney, CPCE. Mr. Mahoney has done it all in our industry. His personal touches in our local industry have include  guiding students into new careers, supporting local hospitality efforts, training and managing the best Orlando has to offer. Joe has worked in the kitchen on the lines and in the office on the phones. It’s almost safe to say, if you work in hospitality Joe Mahoney may have helped your career or your property. I encourage you be a part of this historic event on March 23, 2010

Our NACE web site is getting a face-lift soon. The board is excited to have the improved control to communicate NACE information efficiently. We are also planning on being the first NACE chapter to launch a lead generating web site. This aspect of our web site is going to take time to develop and time to market. With our members help word will spread and we all benefit.
This year Orlando NACE is participating in the Orlando WOW awards. An advisory committee has been meeting monthly to create awards that benefit all vendors from the event industry and multiple associations including ISES, MPI, NACE, HSMAI and ABC.  This year the Orlando WOW Awards will include catering awards and I encourage all members to submit and participate. In addition please take note of the RFP being distributed for this event. So reserve the date Sept. 10, 2010, you could be the next Orlando WOW Awards big winner!!!
If you are not a member of NACE, now is the time to join. Our “Spring” into NACE membership campaign begins March 22, 2010. Assist us in spreading the word about benefits of NACE!! Our spring membership campaign is one like you’ve never seen before. Not only will new members or members who have lapsed for a year or more receive membership at the special rate of $295 (a $100 savings), they also receive a $25 gift certificate to the NACE Store.  To apply for this New Member Rate: visit www.nace.net – Online Discount Code: SPR10 (Code is REQUIRED to receive discount online)

Vice President's Report

Everyone loves a wedding….

Our February meeting was a wonderful display of all of the finest details that make an amazing wedding. Weddings are important not only important to our industry, but our communities, our culture and are celebrated across the globe. They are more than the joining of a couple, but a joining of two families. As Brandi Zrallack mentioned in her presentation, it doesn’t matter how poor the economy gets, people will continue to get married. Yes, they may take cost-cutting measures, but there will still be weddings to celebrate. I encourage you to treat each and every couple as if they were your best piece of business ever. The word of mouth referrals will be priceless.

In our continuing journey thorough the five traits of key leaders, we will now explore the third of the key traits:

·         You must learn to be a great decision maker

How do you make decisions? Do you have a process to analyze them? If the decision involves spending money, perhaps you will do a cost analysis. Or, maybe you’ll get your team together and analyze the pros and cons.

Some companies, like Loews Hotels, do a SWOT Analysis and analyze the S-Strengths, W-Weaknesses, O-Opportunities and T-Threats. Hard Rock Corporate makes decisions based on how they create guest experiences that are Authentic, Passionate, Irreverent, Unpredictable and Democratic. The 2010 NACE Board has committed to filter each and every decision we make based on whether it supports our 2010 Vision Statement.

To grow and strengthen our membership, teach about national and local resources, develop our student chapter, enhance our program content, establish NACE in the community as a resource and maintain open and positive relations with our members, committees and other professional associations.

Of course, some leaders, don’t analyze their decisions and fly by the seat of their pants. You don’t want to be this kind of leader. These leaders waffle on decision-making, change their minds, and frustrate their teams.

Here’s a process that you can implement, if you struggle with decision-making, it’s called the Q-CAT:

Q= Quick- be quick, but not hasty.
C= Committed- be committed to your decision, but not rigid.
A= Analytical- be analytical, but don’t over-analyze (too much analysis can cause paralysis)
T= Thoughtful- be thoughtful about all concerned, but don’t be obsessive

This process will assist you in knowing when to bring others into the decision-making process and what steps to take in order to make better decisions.

See you at the March meeting!
